Valul lui Traian

The Valul lui Traian region covers southern and south-western Moldova, from the Prut to the Budjak steppe: the Leova, Cantemir, Cahul and Taraclia districts and the Gagauz autonomy. It is named after the earthen ramparts that cross the south of the country and are traditionally linked to the emperor Trajan. IGP Valul lui Traian has about 26 thousand hectares of vineyards by CORINE 2023, the second-largest IGP zone. Its soils are light, well aerated and of limited fertility; the summer heat is tempered by the Black Sea and the forests of the Tigheci hills, which rise to 301 m. DOP Ciumai and DOP Tigheci lie here too.
