Pinot Meunier

Pinot Meunier, or simply Meunier (VIVC 9278), is a mutation of Pinot Noir, confirmed by DNA markers; the name — “miller” — comes from the white, flour-like down on its shoots and leaves. It is one of the three main grapes of Champagne alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: it buds later and ripens earlier than Pinot Noir, which spares it spring frosts, and gives supple, fruity base wines that mature quickly. In Germany it is known as Schwarzriesling. In Moldova Rădăcini uses it in its traditional-method sparkling wines.
